Winged Victory of Samothrace. Circa: 190 B.C. Louvre, Paris France. Discovered on the island of Samothrace. Greek Goddess Nike was born before the Olympics and became the goddess of victory. Modern excavations suggest that the Victory occupied a niche in an open-air amphitheater and served as an altar. She is depicted on contemporary coins bringing a trumpet to her lips or crowning the naval victor. Her arms and head have never been recovered, however, in 1950 her hand was found and now resides in a glass case at the Louvre. Sculpted in bonded natural marble, with bronze finish, this beautifully detailed piece measures 11" H. |
